I was wondering if you had ever tried Santa Teresa Araku Coffee Rum Liqueur ? I almost ordered it with that last order, $23 from Shoppers Vineyard, but I had to pare down my cart in some ways and that was one I cut. ******* Capn's Log : Never have, but I can tell you that the Sant Teresa rums are ve...

I hope the coconut and mango are good, I just ordered bottles of them both from Shopper's vineyard when they had a free shipping special yesterday. I almost find the coffee and vanilla rums to be liqueur-like. ******* Capn's Log : Yup, the coffee and vanilla really are liquer-like and simply delicio...

Jwilly - I have seen the Thomas Handy and was very tempted to get it, especially when i was in PA for Thanksgiving where their online store has it for $60 - but that is still a lot of money for me to spend on a bottle, and I have been holding out for some Sazerac 18 yr, which I have yet to spot. And...

One thing I find interesting is the wording "Vodka was chilled to preserve the flavor. Chilling spirits (and beer) is for one purpose only, to subdue the unpleasant aromas and flavor resulting from some of the more volatile compounds in the drink. In spirits these are esters which normally pres...

I agree that the ratings can change from year to year depending on the group - what I found odd was that the regular beefeater moved up while the 24 did not, you would think that the differences that made the 24 better than its sibling in 2010 would have led to the same result in 2011. I was happy t...

I do now see that they rated Sombra mezcal in the 2010 contest - and gave it a 95. I like Sombra quite a bit, but it is rather simple and unrefined compared to some of the better ones such as Chichicapa or Pierde Almas. Lots of smoke, lots of agave, and some fruit - simple but very well integrated, ...

Thanks for the clarification as to the changes in Old Overholt over the years. I recently got a bottle of the Old Grand dad 114 and it is outstanding, instantly became one of my favorite Bourbons, especially given the $22 price tag. If Old Overholt was formerly made by that distillery, that might ex...

I was interested to see their Mezcal ratings - I have recently gotten into this very interesting spirit. Sorry but I really have to question their ratings in that case. (Though I would say they are spot on with other liquors for the most part, seems they just don't have a handle on Mezcal yet.) I am...

I like the Bulleit quite a bit, but I am surprised by the lack of rye bite you would expect in a 95% rye - it reminds me a lot of the Sazerac 6 yr. Very nice sipper. Just as a point of info - Old Overholt has gone through a few different distillers, most everyone who has been a fan for years agrees ...

I don't see a review - have you tried the Brinley's shipwreck spiced rum? I picked up a bottle on sale for $16 when in PA for Thanksgiving, it was so good I ran out and got a couple more. Probably the best spiced rum I have had, though I have yet to try Old new orleans cajun which I have heard is ex...

I would also add Bulleit Rye, if you can find it for a decent price - I have seen it anywhere from $20 - 35. Though it is 95% rye in the mashbill, it has a much smoother mellower profile than the Ritt 100 or Wild Turkey, similar to the Sazerac - not nearly as spicy as you would expect from that much...

Ok I retasted this one last night - love love love it, so complex and spicy but no unpleasant edges. Probably about as much going on as one's palate can handle, this is one that I will keep coming back to as at this time I feel it is beyond me to plumb its depths.

A real put-hair-on-your chest rum.

I just looked at my Foursquare bottle, and I do remember it taking a little bit of work to open - but just a little. Judging by the condition of the seal I just cut enough wax away to expose the perforations in the metal cap. No microwave or hoof trimmer was needed.
