Re: And about the "second most sophisticated" tast

Rum has not even developed a beginner's "rum tasting wheel" or guide (I'm working on one), while whisky has many. So does wine (for some very sophisticated tasters). And beer. And chocolate. And cheese. And more... But not rum. For which those of us still searching, tasting--many times sp...

Imitations: Frankenstein's Rums?

While nosing out the local brewing/vinting shop, I stumbled across a collection of small bottles labeled "Still Spirits Original Spirit Essences", ranging from top name whiskeys to schnapps and liqeurs. In a nutshell, you can take a bottle of top shelf grain alcohol and with these additive...

Sea Wynde

There's times I can be rather garrulous on a subject, other times not. I could go on about the taste and impressions of Sea Wynde, but my husband summed it up when he remarked; "Where single malt Whisky and Fine Rum meet and converts are made."

Nuff said.

Re: Myers's Platinum White Rum

NOSE: Medicinal, alcohol, tingly, very light butterscotch TASTE: The flavors are most definitely rum but not particularly intense or complex. The palette is approached with a very clean, fresh flavor. Tastes tend toward the light brown sugar but are very light with slight alcohol burn on the tongue...

Unfortunately, all is not equal. Some wine producers are cutting costs by using only wood chips and steel tanks in lieu of oak barrels. I've yet to taste any wines where that was a successful approach. Even thought the oak chip surface area may be sufficient, there is very little air/vapor penetrat...

As an ICU/ER nurse, I couldn't agree more with your commentary upon 'tobacco-infused' rums. I have heard that there are those who prefer the other-way-round of rum-infused cigars. Again, not to my taste.

Airing for improvement

In the instance of Rogue's White Rum, I heartily agree that letting this rum breath makes a real improvement to it's body and nose. When first cracked, the first thought that struck me was..."Good god, medicinal!" And the taste was similarly appalling. It was hastily recorked and thrust to...

Hmmm...so it's a rum that has to air before sampling. I'll give it a try, but my first impressions of Prichard's was that of something watery with a hint of ethanol. Very bland across the palate. We shall see. :? ****** Capn's Log : Appreciate your posts mate, thanks. Although all tastings have room...

Pyrate XO

I must admit, I'm a rhum enjoyer who's taken to dabbling in blending. I think one has to keep in mind that not only has Pyrate XO changed it's label, but it's taste since early 2000. Working with the 'orange-honey' flavor, this rum I use as a base with most of my blends--but only as a base. Adding o...

Question: Does the size of the barrel/quantity impact the quality of aging in oak? Small custom batches in firkins/hogheads verses mass produced in huge barrels?
Is this somethings you come across in your Rum-ramblings?

I'd rather shovel than bail and paddle about in a canoe--being marooned in Tacoma, WA just didn't fit in with the planned week. Yes, RT, once we discover the nectar known as Rhum, a number of us also wonder why we didn't start sooner! Mind you, there's a rum I've just lately stumbled across, called ...

Rum and the weaker sex...??

Perhaps those mammals who possess a penial bone are more genetically advanced. Hmm...interesting thought. Would lend legitimacy to some descriptive terms, but cause a massive monetary loss to a number of pharmaceutical companies. Another business having to seek a bail-out loan from the government......
