Rum Transformations

I've had two significant experiences with this. The first was a bottle of Flor de Caña 18 that I was so excited to have finally purchased. I opened it up immediately after returning home and was extremely disappointed. It had a leathery, overly-wooded flavor that just overpowered the rum, so I (very...

Sweet Crude Now Available

Rank Wildcat premiered their initial offering of Sweet Crude last Friday at Marcello's Wine Cellar in Lafayette. It's now available only in the Acadiana area (the Cajun homeland centered around Lafayette) and I've got a bottle secured. I should have it in hand within the next month and will post mor...

Prairie Organic Vodka

On the topic of unimpressive organic spirits, I'll offer one that I've been impressed with... Prairie Organic Vodka . I've always believed that vodka is fairly tasteless except for the effects of the alcohol, so I didn't pay much attention to much more than the price. The over-priced and unimpressiv...

Recommendations and next steps...

I've mentioned a couple of tequilas that I like above and I'll add another here. Since the Cap'n mentions Hornitos (my first decent tequila), I'll add that I've since discovered that El Jimador is an excellent entry level tequila that is quite good. I prefer the Reposado, but they also make a highly...

Sourcing Distillates While Working on In-House Production

It's not unusual for a new distiller to source distillates from other distillers until they have an opportunity to ramp up production and/or properly age their own distillates. A great example is High West Distillery, who has produced vodkas and un-aged whiskeys, while demonstrating a mastery of ble...

phpBB Upgrade

If you're interested in upgrading from phpBB2 (circa 2005) to phpBB3 (currently at version 3.0.10 as of January 2012), then here are the instructions . It's fairly simple and similar to the original installation procedure. Best of all, it can be done in parallel to the current forum, then activated ...

Actually, hold on a minute...

Immediately after posting, I decided to check on the versions of phpBB supported by Tapatalk. It looks like you're still running phpBB2, so I would have to suggest that you upgrade to phpBB3 first.

Tapatalk Support

I do most of my browsing on my iPhone nowadays while I'm waiting for other things to happen. There's a nice application available for phpBB (and other forums) that makes the experience much nicer on a phone (iOS, Android, etc.) or iPad than the standard web interface. The catch is that it requires i...

El Dorado 12

Thanks for the advice on the value of El Dorado 12 vs. 15. I'm actually hoping for a deal on the 15 year, but I'll most likely check out the 12 year first ($25 here) and compare it to my friend's bottle of the 15 year. After all, I don't have unlimited funds. Back to the comparison… even Dave Broom ...

More Practical Suggestions

I've come to really like the spicy bite of rye-forward bourbon whiskeys and rye whiskeys. Here are some more practical buys that are apparently more approachable as well: http://www.totalwine.com/_static/webupload/730/2_1865750_3.jpg http://www.totalwine.com/_static/webupload/730/1_115586750_3.jpg h...

Great Advice!

Thanks for the great advice! I've updated my signature to include my references rather than my favorites . They're listed in my order of preference and I expect to update it as I discover new references. I already know that El Dorado 15 is a strong contender for my Demeraran reference, because I've ...

Washington Cup Spirits Competition Bronze Award

It looks like they entered their first two bottles in a competition in Kansas City and took home a bronze award! My interest is in the grassroots effort, especially since it's from my home in Acadiana (south central Louisiana). Thanks for researching it even more than I did. I've now visited their w...

Sweet Crude Rum from Broussard, LA

It looks like two Cajun entrepreneurs near my hometown of Lafayette, LA are introducing a new rum this month. They've opened up the second full time distillery in Louisiana, Rank Wildcat Spirits Distiller, in order to produce Sweet Crude Rum. This is a small, hands-on operation where one of the owne...

Greetings from North Texas

My name is Mark Hébert and I'm a Cajun (Acadian) transplant from Lafayette, LA who lives in the Dallas, TX area. After starting to explore wines in the last year, I was introduced to rum by my brother who just poured a glass of Pampero Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva añejo rum and said, "Try this...
