15 Year Old

I'd especially be interested in notes on the 15 year old with some comparison to the 5-star (8 year old). I really enjoy the 5-star now, but it took a while to get there. Ever since that epiphany, I've been wondering about the 15 year old.

Today is National Hot Toddy Day and I've been trying several over the past couple of weeks as I recover from pneumonia. Today, I tried it with Mellow Corn and I have to say that this has been the best Hot Toddy yet. I've finally found a good use for my bottle of Mellow Corn that I'm quite satisfied ...

Nice pour indeed! I have a bottle and have only tasted the 20 and 23 from about 2006 (favoring the 23 by a significant margin), but I'm looking forward to the 15, which in recent years is all Buffalo Trace juice (i.e. no Stitzell-Weller juice at all). I have a bottle purchased at retail like you and...

... and you were completely lucky having no first hand knowledge of any of the individuals or any of the products. I'm just saying.... you're bragging about nothing and you sound a bit like you're portrayal of Chip Tate... an egotistical know it all. Being right about a lucky guess doesn't amount to...

Well, IIRC, it was proposed by several (including himself) that it was wrong of us to continue to sell Balcones with his name attached to it. So, they got what they wanted, in a sense. Can't please everyone though. We do have some new products in the works. Can't tell you what they are yet... :) I ...

Re: And now for a bit of balance to all of the negativity...

Tate being limited to making brandy is no competition whatever for Balcones. Hello... non-compete until March 2016! Of course this isn't competition for Balcones... that's forbidden by the courts, so what's your point? Personally, I think it'll be interesting to see what the genius of Chip Tate can...

And now for a bit of balance to all of the negativity...

He has lined up a chief of staff, as well as two distillers whom he trained at Balcones. I guess he hasn't ostracized everyone after all. :-P Be sure to check out the nice quotes from Winston at the end. http://www.wacotrib.com/news/business/ex-balcones-chief-to-make-brandy-whisky-at-new-distillery...

Vodka Tasting Results #2

Well, it's done and here are the results. The tasting was done blind so that there was no bias... identical glasses with the same amounts taken from the same size samples in identical bottles. My son and I immediately identified one that was noticeably harsher, which turned out to be the distilled w...

Tasteless Taste Test from Texas 2.0

Last week, I described this experiment to a friend and his first reaction was, "I've never liked the taste of distilled water." Well, the new batches are poured and the testing commences in a couple of weeks. The samples are of vodka made with Everclear and the following types of water: Di...

Other than marketing a "Christmas" beer, is there any component or profile that defines one? They are typically spiced with Christmas baking spices as you would find in spiced ciders, wassail, etc. (cinnamon, clove, etc.). The base brew can vary from pale ales and lagers to porters and st...

Henry's Tavern in Plano has 100 taps, including many local craft brews. They also rotate about 10 of these taps often and these are typically the ones that I focus on because there's usually a rare brew available in the mix. There are several other places around that provide good craft brew taps, in...

I admire your dedication. $16 for a glass of beer is really taking one for the team. Are you walking normally yet? Let's just say that I was done for the hour that I was there after that single beer. After that it was off to tasting two 28 year old Linkwoods, two Willett single barrel bourbons at 9...

Christmas Beer

It's time to grab a few ales laced with Christmas spices for the holidays. I had a pour of Southern Tier's 2XMAS (double spiced ale brewed in the tradition of Swedish Glögg) the other night. It had loads of cinnamon, clove, allspice... over spiced for me, but still good. I've also secured a couple o...

Avery Rumpkin

I splurged Tuesday night on a $16 pour of Avery Rumpkin, an 18% ABV imperial pumpkin ale aged in a Gosling rum barrel for 6 months (how appropriate to this forum). I was previously unable to secure a bottle and it's all long gone, so I was excited to get to try it on draft at a local pub (but not ab...
