Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica rum

On my recent excursion to Scotland with 28 fellow whisky aficionados, I actually managed to find nice rums as well :-) One such was Smith and Cross Traditional Jamaica rum - Pure pot still Plummer & Wedderburn 57%. Taken text from "Haus Alpenz" (bottlers of Scarlet Ibis I believe) webs...

Glen Moray distillery

In the age of a massive boom in demand for most famous brands of single malt whisky, one may be positively surprised by some of the perhaps slightly less known distilleries and their malts. One such distillery/brand is definitely Glen Moray, a distillery I visited recently. The distillery produces a...

A very good article on an important topic. It is sad to see so many consumers and even bloggers sing praise for "super-premium" products (!?!?!??) that are nothing but masterpieces of laboratories. It is hard for the honest people making real rums, because all the BS stories and products/b...

Sorry for hopping in late into this discussion. In USA - I'm afraid I cannot really help, too much red tape etc shipping stuff there. In Europe, if you have good relations to independent bottlers, you can negotiate with them and see if they are willing to sell a cask of rum/whisky & bottle it fo...

Additives in "rum" - Glycerine

http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=54865&p=7299022&hilit=glycerine#p7299022 An interesting topic here...Additives that rum industry for example uses to improve and "premiumize" products fast & cheap. Quoting: "Glycerine is a very common additive in the...

I wish it was only sugar in this "rum", but I much suspect that there's far more in it...like in vastly overwhelming numbers of Hispanic rums in particular. Laws are very, very lenient in these countries, and the laws are old. Methodology is based on 19th century brandy making skills. The ...

Oops and btw... While testing, I retasted it and I'm inclined to now agree. Funny thing, the more you become aware of sugar - thanks to the tests - the more skilled one becomes at noticing it. J, if I may be so bold, would you or whomever find a way to link the Master Sugar List at the Club? http:/...

Mr. Luis Ayala himself did some "funnies" when making his book, I did not know what to say when I saw it to be honest. Also it broke to pieces the very first time I opened it, and the coming months, the ink printed smudged really badly through the pages, making it virtually unreadable sadl...

Santa Teresa 1796: Sugar or not?

A big discussion ongoing in the Rum Club, as we have been trying to figure out some details about this Venezuelan rum.. Many seem absolutely convinced that this distillery does not use any additives - I feel a bit differently, and it is funny what comments one gets from some well-knowing individuals...

Anyone done any sugar tests on Santa Teresa rums? I have not found any results from anyone, and wonder - some say no added sugar, but my mouth, based on memory from 10+ years ago, seems to disagree...Anyone?

Global Rum Club was an open FB page until this week I think - At least I got a notification that it has been changed into a closed (members only) FB page. Thank goodness I do not work with rum or even with whisky, my money comes from elsewhere and the drinks are just a hobby. I'd hate to not be able...

A few whisky news from around the world...

Apparently Nikka, Japanese whisky maker, has basically low stock of aged spirit, and is trashing their age statement lineup (selling them out, and bringing a new NAS lineup). Yoichi 10yo, Yoichi 15yo, 21yo - all selling now like wildfire, as their prices soar. GlenDronach 15yo is finito, kaput, out ...

I have bought one small 0.2l bottle of Plantation rum, Trinidad one, many years ago out of curiosity. It had been spoiled beyond recognition. Enough said.. My exact experience with the Jamaican bottling, if only they just would release all these rums without "dosing" them, it would then b...

In the world of Scotch (and Irish I gather) whisky, no law or rule that I am aware of bans recasking. This can also be done due to a faulty cask - a leak springs up, or upon checking someone notices something not going right in the maturation - so the whisky is whisked into another cask. Also on occ...
