Purity of Rum: the Preacher Pouts and Dances

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Um, er, oh... the Preacher speaks. Or not...

In a few nearby posts I've drawn your short attentions to several new super-duper-mega-intergalactic uber-premium rums, namely Diplomatico Ambassador Selection at about $300 and Panamonte XXV Preciosa at an amazing $400. So what could possibly justify these two rums' super high prices?

Purity.

In addition to the usual backstories, and fuck you custom bottles, both make a very big deal about their purity, claiming "...no additives, coloring, caramel or flavorings of any kind!". One of them is bottled at 47%, and even boasts of being unchillfiltered. In other words, these two rums are presented in the manner, and with a like purity as fine single malts. Ergo the prices.

But there's a problem.

These two rums are the first to really, specifically promote purity, a subject near and dear to my heart. Now there are a precious few pure rums (think Richard Seale) but they have never been promoted in this fashion. Purity is a very big deal, and the publicity emanating from these two well known companies breaks this very important barrier.

By exclaiming their purity, they put most of the rest of the cheaters on notice. Most of what is labeled "rum" actually contains all manner of such additives and adulterants, but which never, ever appear on the label or are spoken of.

Diplomatico and Panamonte have thrown down the gauntlet. Either fess up or fuck off cheaters, they seem to say.

Rum Promoters are in a Bind!

How on earth will the rumsuckers promote these two top tier rums that are based on purity on one hand, and still promote the all their altered rums on the other. Customers might realize their "rum" is full of additives, and/or that their neighborhood promoter is full of shit.

The Preacher is in a bind. So how did he list the new and pure Diplomatico Ambassador?

Simple. He posted one of the most glowing backstories and lucious tasting notes I've seen in quite some time, and even ran his mouth about their two stage aging, use of pot stills, et al. And about their primary claim of purity?

Nada, nix, nothing, cero... Zero. He avoided the subject, and apparently hopes his slope headed monkeys won't notice this important omission.

Bottom Line:

1. The Preacher is no dummy, and knows full well that the Ambassador's primary, price justifying claim is their additive free "purity".

2. He knows equally well that most other rums are not pure, and cannot make this claim.

3. He apparently hopes that like his monkeys, we are all so brainwashed and stupid as to not notice or care.

When faced with two rums that actually live up to his claim of "Rum... the Noble Spirit", he opts out. Personally I can't wait until the promoted purity of these two extravagant rums becomes a subject of discussion at the "...it's all good" corral. How will the monkeys react to a rum to the notion of "purity"? Will they reject these real rums as lacking the phony flavors to which they've become accustomed? Will the products of Richard Seale, Pusser's or the few other possibly pure rums be raised?

I can't wait. The jig is up and purity, my dear Preacher, is now your problem. It was never mine... it's time to pay the purity piper!

Funny thing is, anyone can buy pure rums from a number of independent bottlers at least in Europe, and for far less $$$ at any given day. It's that simple: Purity doesn't cost an arm and a leg! :-)
