As previously covered - and in perfect sync with the division of society into two classes - we are now being presented with two distinct types of rums. The first - bottles labeled "rum" but containing unlabeled additives, coloring, sugar and flavoring, and in-your-face cheep column-stilled concoctions like Batshit Dingleberry are designed for the jobless and about to be so.
They're all full of real and artificial shit. Like jokester's plastic doggie poo. Worse yet, this class of crapola have taken over most of the shelves.
The second - a handful of super-duper-mega premiums like Diplomatico Ambassador ($300) and Panamonte XXV Reserva Preciosa ($400) and now joined by - ta da! - Dos Maderas Luxus (10+5) at an estimated $210. To justify their outrageous and stratospheric prices the first two are loudly proclaiming their "purity": no additives, colorings, caramel or flavorings of any kind! One is bottled at cask strength and is unchillfiltered.
In other words these rums are made and promoted in the fashion, purity and quality of the true noble spirit - single malt whisky. But how about the new Dos Maderas "Luxus"? To find out I sent them this email:
Unlike the usual rum shills, I want to know whether the Luxus, like Ambassador and Preciosa (who have exposed altered cheaper rums for what they are) is the real deal, or simply another Sidney Frank style marketing of story and custom bottle.Moi: "At The Rum Project we recently had the opportunity to taste and review your Dos Maderas 5+3 - it was magnificent and this rum received a notably high rating. We have also noticed the release of a number of super premium rums including Diplomatico Ambassador, Panamonte XXV Reserva Preciosa and your new "Luxus", all top shelf rums.
My question: the other rums named have made much of the fact that they contain no "colorings, additives, caramel or flavorings of any kind". In addition one is bottled at higher proof, and is unchillfiltered. Does your "Luxus" make any such claims?
Thanks.
