Diageo, Australia, Google and a blanket

Post by da'rum »

Australians will soon be directed to a site that Diageo owns when searching for drinks,...

>>Diageo eyes Google searches in bid to corner cocktail market

DRINKS group Diageo Australia is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on its biggest ever search-engine marketing campaign: to top the list of 65 million Google searches Australians make each year using cocktail and drinks-related key words.

Type anything from "cocktail recipes" to "make a cosmopolitan" into the search engine and chances are you'll be directed to Mixionary.com, a website featuring more than 200 different cocktail recipes designed to showcase the company's wide portfolio of spirit brands -- everything from Johnnie Walker scotch whisky to Tanqueray gin to boutique, barrel-flavoured Bundaberg rum varieties. If the site generates enough traffic, the search-engine marketing spend, which will be live for at least six months, will decrease as Google's search algorithm begins to prioritise the website in its organic, or unpaid, search rankings.

"It's by far the biggest that we've done because we've bought every key word," says Matt Bruhn, marketing director for Diageo Australia. <<

Diageo has become my sworn enemy I will do my very best to never again consume, recommend or mention in a good light anything or any brand owned by this monster of a company.

They are pretty much the opposite of all the ethics I would prefer from a company.

It's a piss poor site...

Fortunately, I am sure our crew is not so easily misled. This is the price we pay for the unbridled growth of the mega-corporatization, aka the Walmartization of everything. Apparently this must apply to Australian browsers, as "Mixionary.com" doesn't make the first page of my searches.

It may just be a matter of time, as Diageo slowly colonizes the world. It may also be of interest that their recipe for a "Dark 'N Stormy" specifies Bundaberg. Although I believe Bundaberg got to the trademark first, their website is available outside of Australia in Gosling's territory.

That is interesting, so how does that work? Does Diageo (who owns Bundy rum) share the DnS trademark with Goslings?

The story of Gosling's Dark 'N Stormy...

The story of Gosling's Dark 'N Stormy...

The order of things was something like this - first, that the traditional Dark 'N Stormy became popular in the British Isles, starting in Bermuda. It was traditionally made with Gosling's Black Seal and Barritt's Ginger Beer. At a point Gosling's filed trademarks/copyrights in most countries, but the Aussie's beat them to it in Australia.

How trademark happens is misunderstood by some as to be based on "first use"; actually it is based far more on "first filing" rather than on "first use". In Gosliing's case, both were true except in Australia where Bundie filed first and legally stole the name.

Thanks mate, I remember back in the day drinking Bundy dark n stormy's out of pre mix cans at the pub. After ten of them you stopped caring that they taste awful.
