In Ohio?: How to find good rum (like Mount Gay Extra Old)

Post by jankdc »

I just got a bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old and Ron Matusalum Grand Reserve. These are both on close-out in Ohio and will not be brought back. Other Rums that are on closeout and may still be on a dusty shelf somewhere are Barbancourt Reserve Special (which I think is the 5-star) and Gosling's Black Seal.

Here is how to find if any of these (or other rums) are available close to you.

First go to the Ohio Commerce Division of Liquor Control : Web Database Search. Type in the brand you are looking for in the Brand Name/Type field. Enter either the City, Zip, or County that you want to search for and hit the "Wait" button.

Here are the search terms for the rums above:
MT GAY EXTRA OLD RUM
BARBANCOURT
RON MATUSALEM
GOSLINGS

If any results come up, call the stores and see if they are still on the shelf before driving to pick some up. I made that mistake the other night and got home an hour late with nothing to show. After searching, I needed to drive 45 minutes into the next county, but I got some great rum at a great price.

Though not on closeout, Pritchard's and Pusser's Blue Label can be hard to find so you might want to do a search for them.

Also, you may want to see what is available locally before setting out to the state store. Go to the Liquor Control Agency Database Search (this is a different search page from the link above). Type in your City, Zip, or County. Click the Search button and then choose the State Store that you want and click View Brands. You can then call the store to make sure they have what you want in stock.

I don't know the politics but...

We're spoiled in our south Florida paradise. Liquor is freely available in any number of large and small retailers of all kinds. Thus the choice of liquors, wines and beers are completely up to the owner. We are blessed with some very knowledgable Indian stores and small chains who believe in stocking hard-to-find, collectible and interesting spirits of all kinds, that may not be available at the huge stores (think ABC, Total Wine). They will order spirits and are open to suggestion. They are negotiable. And they love to discount (how about a liter of Pussers Blue Label for $19)!

I continue to be amazed that the controlled states don't seem to have a clue about what's real good, or what appeals to the afficianado. Perhaps someone here can comment on the politics of this, as I have to believe the controllers are susceptible to the politics and clout of the Bacardis, et al.

Any comments?
