I came to this forum looking for what bottle of rum I should get. After reading the ebook, I started searching for my reference collection. None of the reference rums were available in any of my local stores, but after some research and calling different stores, I did find MGXO and Ron Matusalum that was 40 minutes away. After two trips, I cleaned out their stock (it was 1/2 off @ $15 and $20/bottle).
I've also picked up some Pusser's Blue label and some Wray and Nephew Overproof (I have a hard time sipping W&N and yes I did dilute it).
We are visiting my wife's family in Maryland, and today I went to a state store. I knew that they would have Appleton 12 year and El Dorado 15, but as luck would have it they also had Barbancourt Five Star. Both Appleton and Barbancourt was on sale. I think that the Barbancourt being closed out here in Maryland.
Tomorrow, I'm headed into DC to look for some Doorly's XO or Seale's 10 year.
Anyway, I'm excited. We'll be sipping tonight.
Tomorrow
Reader Dept: Almost there...
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
My understanding of rum has just exponentially increased. We ended up sipping each of the new rums tonight and that I immediately thought was that each of these are a very special rum. We've had two of these before, the Appleton Extra 12 and the Barbancourt 5 star. I originally had the Appleton Extra a few years ago. I had gotten it after getting a bottle of Ten Cane. I remember it was so full of smell and flavors. Sipping the Extra tonight was like welcoming an old friend. I know that rum. I also know that it is the same style as the Pusser's blue label.
It was on closeout at the time, and I got it for around $20. Unfortunately it was gone when I went back to get more. We were in upstate New York later that year and when I went looking for it again, I still couldn't find it. At one store the owner recommended the Barbancourt 5 star. I was disappointed. It wasn't as strong in flavor or smell as the Appleton. Don't get me wrong, I knew it was a good rum. But I couldn't appreciate it because it wasn't the Appleton. Tonight I was able to appreciate it. While it is not bold, it is definately complex and smooth. Unfortunately it gets overpowered when comparing to the Appleton but a fine fine rum. I look forward to doing a comparison with the Ten Cane and Ron Matusalem.
The Appleton was the third rum that we tasted tonight, the second was El Dorado 15. At first I felt like it was too intense, that I liked the Barbancourt better. After a while I came to appreciate it more and more. I feel that in some ways it's the best rum that I had tonight. I look forward to exploring it more in the coming months.
Out of the three tonight my favorite rum is the Appleton. Like the Capn and MGXO, this was the first rum that I truly enjoyed, I am very glad to have a bottle of it again. I should probably pick up another before I leave town. I know now that my favorite styles of rums are currently Jamaican, Cuban, and possibly Demeraran. I'll be adding to my collection focusing on these styles first.
So thank you, thank you, thank you for this site. I have learned so much and am really enjoying some great rums.
Current Rums: Mount Gay Extra Old, Ten Cane, El Dorado 15, Appleton Extra 12, Wray and Nephew Overproof, Pusser's Blue Label, Ron Matusalem, Barbancourt 5 star.

Capn's Log: Thanks for the compliment. We are all learning together, and if we can help one another out, so much the better.

I just picked up Scarlet Ibis and Westerhall plantation rums from Ace Beverage in Washington D.C. I'm trying to decide what to break open first.

Found out that my brother in law's favorite spirit is rum, so the family had a rum tasting tonight.

I have to say they were all very good. My favorites were the Westerhall plantation and the Appleton Extra. My wife and her sister liked the El Dorado and my brother in law liked the Scarlet Ibis. Everyone had a good time. It was great, they were all good. Really.
