Rum, cigars and coffee...
Go together like, well you've heard it already. Sleepy suggested a coffee section and it's worth a shot, er cup. You'll note the new section, and Sleepy better fackin wake up and hold forth there. Do be sure to drop in. I suggest a boycott of Starbucks, lol...

Diageo to Buy Starbucks!
Just kidding! Please don't tell me that I have to boycott Starbucks!
I do like a good cup of java in the morning and most afternoons. I haven't ventured too far out into local roasters because of the great variation that I've found. The main thing that I like about Starbucks is that I can count on the consistency of their roast and their beans. I like dark roast, which is their mainstay, and I like strong coffee, which is the only way that I brew it (and don't even get me started on decaffeinated coffee).
I'm really intrigued by the home roasting and the main reason is the consistency. If I could settle on a consistent roasting method to use for various beans (I like Indonesian, African, South American, etc.), then I'd be set.
Thanks for kicking this off!

I don't boycott Charbucks, but, when on the road, if there's a Caribou, Aurora or even Dunkin' Donuts, I'll go there first.
Charbucks has done a great job of introducing varietal coffees to America, but, as far as I can tell, it is sold far too long after (over)roasting, losing a lot of the origin character of the volume batches that they buy. Their espresso drinks are consistent if unremarkable - and they do sell GOOD oatmeal and molasses cookies!
As I get my act together over on the coffee section, I'll post threads on brewing (which can get the best out of so-so coffee), roasting and even history and the role of coffee and cafes in the founding of the modern monetary system! I hope you enjoy!
