El Dorado Gift pack

Post by Dai »

The wife and daughter went to London for the weekend leaving me on my lonesome (ya nice quiet weekend to my self). They brought me a gift pack of rum back (must of been feeling guilty) El Dorado 12, 15, and 21 it's about as close to the 21 as I'm going to get, at £80 a bottle for a full bottle. Mines only a miniature pity but never mind I shall enjoy sipping it all the same.

Moral of the story is. If you can lay a guilt trip and get 21 year old rum out of I suggest you do it.

I think I will save it for the weekend and I'll let you know what I think of it.

Sounds like a good time for a comparison...

And if you do, first keep this in mind:

. . . . . . .Image

According to this chart the 12 is a Coffey stilled product, the 15 adds a significant wooden pot still element, and the 21 depends on the multi-column French Savalle stills.

Have fun - we look forward to your impressions.

I was thinking the very same. I don't know how much of a comparison I can make of it but, will be giving it a go.

The 21 is a fine rum, I do prefer the 15 though it is a bit better balanced for my tastes

For me it's the opposite I prefer the 12 less of a charred oak taste to it. Everyone to there own. That's half the fun of this rum tasting stuff. Looking forward to trying the 21. In a way I'm hoping it's better and in a way not it's to damn expensive.

The 21 has an even more pronounced smokey taste to it than the 15. The 21 is a great Cigar rum. A nice Maduro wrapped Don Pepin goes well with the 21.

I'm a non smoker but did try a cigar once though. Brought it back from the Dominican. You have to try these things once in your life.

I'm also a a non smoker now. BUT when I did smoke...the Don Pepin's were one of my favourites.

The strong chocolatey thick smoke combined well with the oaked 21 year old. With one of those cigars and a big dram of ED I could easily waste and hour or so on the porch looking at the windmills.

Blowing rings...

I have not smoked much of my life, but when I was younger I enjoyed a good cigar. These days Sue Sea and I are known to light up and share one with a compatible rum or whisky. Da'rum clearly does as well. Our favorite cigar:

The Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story - a short but lovely smoke that is simply delicious. The only one we enjoy more is made by Granpa Rodriguez of the well known Rogdriguez Cigars in Key West. It's a little hole in the wall operation for over 30 years, with the family working together in the classic fashion. They use Dominican tobacco, no surprise.

The Hemingways are special for us as they have a nice Camaroon wrapper - which provides much of its wonderful earthy and leafy aroma. Lovely. We are so hooked on the Camaroon flavor that we look for cigars that use them. So nice. Our short list, in order...

1. Fuente Hemingway Short Story

2. Sancho Panza Dulcinea

3. Sancho Panza Quixote

4. Fuente Spanish Lonsdale

That's enough blowing smoke for today, lol...

To my way of thinking the 21 and the 25 and to some extent the 15 show what the Cognac and Armagnac boys call rancio. Kind of an old soggy wood character that adds depth and complexity while it speaks to the age of the product. I much prefer it to the over the top sweetness that so many rums, even older ones, seem to default to.

More on topic, I picked up six of the El Do gift packs in Key West last summer to give to friends. All of the bottles of 21 were only half full. It was disappointing. Not sure if the bottles had been tampered with as all the tops on all the bottles were a little loose.

None of the 21's in my packs were filled above the label.
I'm guessing someone at the liquor store helped themselves.

That's strange pity you couldn't of taken them back guessing it was to late by the time you noticed.
