It's a matter of interpretation. It's interpretation on a personal level. There is a huge jump from offering a drink of strong rum and hoping you get your leg over because she is a bit more relaxed because of it. The vast majority of guy's don't go out to rape women whether they are drunk or not, most people's individual standards fall well short of rape. That show is meant to be controversial in it's analysis for ratings. Like the guy says if you can't offer a woman a tidy drink then what is this world coming to.

Agreed....
Look. Rape is a serious matter and happens - it did to my daughter, so I will never be accused of being soft on rape. And my background is in advertising and marketing - having written many commercials I do understand inuendo.
This ad is fine. The video raises the notion that the ad promotes something like "...give her a strong drink and get her into bed". That's a real stretch. First of all the ad leads with "Avoid the Friend Zone". The implication: you want a girlfriend, not a buddy. But that's the lead in - the main line is "Offer her a real drink". That's a far, far cry from "a strong drink". The implication: if you want to impress her, don't buy her a draft beer; rather, serve her a fine Angostura rum, which is subheaded "We know good taste".
This is a great line because it sets the theme of the ad: quality, with good taste, and IN good taste. It's no different than the ads selling diamond pendants or Caribbean vacations as a means to impress.
The point: look, it's possible to take innuendo as far as one's devious little mind wants to but I can tell you from both a personal and professional standpoint that this ad doesn't go anywhere near rape. If it does than so does every other beer and spirits ad that shows sexy young people partying hearty.
Bottom line:
Angostura pulled their ad, but not because the complaints were justified. Shame on those who projected their own hangups onto Angostura. Surely they have better things to do...

Sorry to hear about that for your daughter. My daughter (30) is going through the computer dating stuff (she is not living in her home town) and getting to meet people is difficult and being 30 you need a way to meet people. Yes this stuff runs through the back of mind on a regular basis. like you say if we were to literally take any alcohol ad and go with the innuendo we'd all be locking our daughters no matter what age they are.
I voted take the advertisement out of circulation. Not because it promotes rape, but because I think it is a fairly pathetic advertisement in general!
The imagery is bad IMHO, and the whole ad looks really dumb. In the small pic, there the guy and the attractive young ting engaged in a discussion or more. Who's the menacing guy in the big picture, the same guy?
Angostura has recently triumphed in making bad advertising their thing. I found their ad which makes fun of Scottish men really in bad taste. call me a square, but yeah - bad taste. Lo and behold, if someone did this and managed to mock in a similar "funny" way some Caribbean island, the people would be jumpin up in arms and callin de ad racism, biggotry, God alone know what else in less than a millisecond of time.
Angosture could much improve things for themselves by sorting out that vanilla-creme-brulee-concoction-of-a-rum of theirs called 1919 first, and making it an honest rum - instead of making dumb ads, and promo videos that claim their product is "better than single malt scotch". Looking at CL Brands' portfolio, gimme Bunnahabhain any day - At least I know it is an honest single malt whisky.
