Thinking of trying this in the next month or two has anyone got any experience of it. I shall be dipping my toe in the water with a sample from masterofmalt.com but, in the mean time I'd like to hear your experiences if you have any.
Thanks Dai

Capn's Log: Dave Russell has a decent palate and gave it a good write up (here). I do know that it must be produced to over 90% alcohol in a two column still, as it is then diluted to 87.5% for aging allegedly in first-use ex-bourbon barrels for at least 3 years. I'd expect a light rum, with notable vanillan, but do let us know if you go forward. Very hard to get, have never seen it.
Sunset Captain Bligh XO
Just finished the Bligh XO and not all that impressed with it to be honest. Nearest thing to compare it with would be Doorly's XO not taste wise but texture wise, if that makes sense.
You get a caramel taste along with an alcohol taste which is subdued with a drop of water or an ice cube. All I can say is for a 10 year old rum it should be a lot smoother than it is. When comparing price there are better rums out there at a similar price.

Sometimes you get the bear, but lately...
A shame, but this is truly the state of affairs. I can't speak for the Caribbean, but did you know the United States has long had laws on the bonding of spirits? As you know bonding is simply the storage of spirits in locked and managed facilities under government supervision and authority.
Our bond laws were passed around a hundred years ago at a time when moonshining and counterfeiting was common. At that time the legitimate producers pushed for the law in an attempt to protect themselves. These companies then did bond their products. Labels carried official stickers, and boasted of "Bottled in Bond".
The protected companies were happy to protect their products, the government was happy to protect their taxes and the public was happy to be able to buy authentic spirits of guaranteed age.
No more.
Dai's "Captain" invention, er product, like many others, make absolutely unproveable age claims. Even though the bond laws are still on the books, they are optional. As should be perfectly obvious very, very few products are bonded in the US (unlike Canada). No one's checking, there is no documentation, and there are no records we will ever see.
It's all based on trust. Good luck. That rustling in the bushes? Another bear...

Be my guest, your taste will be different to mine. So you may find it good.da'rum wrote:That's a pity that if it's not good rum. Thanks for the review Dai. If I come across it I may still try it to compare with your findings.
Cheers mate.
For the price I find there are better rums out there ED 8, Matusalem GR 15, XM VXO Rum 7 Year Old, Diplomatico Reserva, Angostura 7, and these are just the ones I've tried there are many more I'd frefer to spend my money on.
