Haven't you had enough?
Let's face it, with the latest reveal of JUST the added sugar, not to mention gawd knows what else we are rapidly running out of quality rums. I'm sure that many of us had already caught on to Plantation (still revered at the Shillery) and more lately El Dorado, but the actual extent is still rather shocking. We have not yet run out of pure rums commonly available at good prices, but for Richard Seales we'd have a lot fewer. Recently Hassouni asked "...is it possible to try an unsweetened Demerara rum easily?".
It depends on what you call easily, but compared to a fine single malt, say an 18yo at $140, a equally old pure Demeraran at $60 or $70 doesn't sound half bad. Think Berry Brothers at Total Wine.
Per JaRiMi (paraphased):
"I'd rather spend $60 for one bottle of a really fine independent rum than three bottles of ordinary altered rum"...
He is so right, and I'm there with him. Ergo the issue is identifying the reliable independents, in order:
Hamilton: are you kidding?
Plantation: see sugar content.
Rum Nation: on hold.
This would leave the following:
A.D. Rattray (Scotland)
Berry Bros. & Rudd (England, Total Wine)
Bristol Spirits (England)
Cadenhead's (Scotland)
Murray McDavid (Scotland, various suppliers)
Some of you are no doubt familiar with the Whisky Exchange, Masterofmalt, along with many other resources. But as for the Demeraran Hass, a quick trip to Total Wine & Spirits might just do it, but...
You may want to hurry. I've noted that while the Berry whisky's are listed, the rums are not and it is quite possible they've discovered that monkeys don't buy good rum...

to add to the list:
Samaroli

I know I can go to TW for the Berry's, but lately I've been spending my money on whisky and recently bought a case of the now defunct Bruichladdich Ten (another independent bought by a MNC), so my booze purchases are REALLY curtailed lately....and by the way I don't think any of those indies can be had for $60.
As to the others, where the F does one buy them??
