That voodoo that you do, or, Dude, where's my Deadhead Rum?

Post by Uisge »

I saw this today while browsing the local Bevmo!, and while I didn't buy it, I figure it would be worth posting on here to see if anyone else has seen this locally.

If nothing else, could this be the other extreme of rum where, instead of purity of components, this is even more the gimmick than even Ron de Jeremy?
Deadhead Rum And of course, being from the South part of the SF Bay Area, what came to my mind when I saw the tan fabric bag with the brown logo was that other kind of Deadhead Image Groovy, man!

I figure y'all can use a break from the Machiavellian drama of MOR scheme to produce a rum (after buying 20x the needed amount of caramel, if my recollection is correct) or of the USVI subsidies. I know there are other things that have pushed my buttons, and a break from that kind of stress is always a good and needed relief.

On good news, I did spy a miss-shelved bottle of Powers John's Lane Irish Single Pot Still whiskey (the only one in the place, 'natch) which did manage to follow me home, along with a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 YO bourbon.

A good day, on balance 8)

We love the U-man!

And love that bottle! Actually, you are soooooo right. We definitely need a break and this is a great one. The U-man is always welcome, and we love his posts and pics. And that bottle! An amazing resemblance to my ex-wife, whose "tsanta" trophy head occupies a honored location hanging over my workbench!

And let's just say that both Sue and I in our distant youth were not strangers to exotic herbs and the "heads". Sue Sea even left home and traveled to California to join the kids in northern Cali and lived there.

About my ex, er Deadhead...

It goes without saying that the rum appears to be an extreme example of a marketing induced circle jerk, but I decided - as always - to doodoo my usual due diligence and at least on screen, it was pretty interesting:
Distilled from cane juice and high grade molasses. Double-distilled in pot stills. Aged six years in European Oak (cognac, whiskey, sherry, bordeaux, port and rojas barrels). Possible "solera" aging. Final charcoal filtering.
Dig it. This got my full attention as I asked - could a way overmarketed rum actually be a good one? In almost every other case I'd run, not walk away from one of these. But the rest don't share or promote details like these, and if true this is a rum that may be the exception. One other note: this rum is apparently made in Vera Cruz, Mexico. Although tequilas are interesting, most are WAY overpriced, but we will say this: Mexico, like Scotland, is proud of their spirit and works to make a relatively pure product. If their rum is another example, well...

It might be worth a try. Thanks for the break...

Special Note: the Deadhead was reviewed by the well known Robert Plotkin who we met in Tampa. Although he is a semi-shill, he has a wonderful palate and his reviews are worth reading, here:

Can't be found in south Florida, but was available mailorder for $29:

Shades of Machiavelli...

Here's a real curiosity. Deadhead website is clear to promote the source of this rum from Veracruz, with the usual marketing hype about water emanating from "snow covered cap of Pico de Orizaba – the highest volcanic peak in North America". And tosses in its silver from 2012 Spirits of Mexico Competition. All designed to sell Deadhead's Mexican heritage and country of production.

Yet I found this at http://slowcocktails.squarespace.com/di ... uilamezcal
"Three variations of Deadhead rum (above, left, spiced, three-year, and seven-year; evidently sourced from the Foursquare Distillery on Barbados)"
WTF!? Made not in Mexico but by Richard? If so, you can believe the label and in its purity. If not?

Next up is the claim of aging in European wood. This alone is worth the price of admission, as such wood is ten times more expensive than the usual ex-bourbon cooperage used. Deadhead should have left well enough alone. But instead they define the wood as "...aging in cognac, whiskey, sherry, bordeaux, port and rojas barrels are meticulously combined".

I would like to believe this. I'd like to think that this concept was invented six or seven years ago in future anticipation of "Deadhead". That they established not one but six expensive soleras. That their source of cooperage for these six lines was maintained with consistent quality. And that the final blend will not vary. But truth be told, that's an awful lot to swallow.

Time will tell.

The link you posted for the Slowocktails came up as a dead one (appropriate considering the brand name for this rum, no?), but this one from April of last year seems to work, as well as give a look at the 2 other brands and their respective packaging.

I'm intrigued that the Flashbang brand, which on the official website lists tequila, in the above link I posted shows an herbal liqueur, whiskey, vodka, and if my squinting eyes aren't making me see things, a rum?

Ooops, not rum, but the tequila. False alarm

According to Richard Seale...

I've maintained an infrequent email relationship with Richard for some years, so I dropped a quick email to Deadhead, cc'd to Richard. Richard got back almost immediately to state that Foursquare has nothing to do with Deadhead rum.

Actually I was surprised to see the claim by at least two websites in re Foursquare, as he long ago made clear that if he makes it, he bottles it. The reason is simple - most of us are really unaware of just how much bulk rum is sold, blended, and altered before the marketing department gets their hands on it.

It will be interesting to see if Deadhead will answer the email.

I take it that any possibility of a reply is about as small as a tsanta, yes? :|

I saw that my local Bevmo! had the miniature version and I figured I could make the purchase for the novelty, if nothing else.

A review might happen later
