When Pigs Fly Dept: Hamilton finally admits additives!

Post by Capn Jimbo »

There's an old saying: "When you are being run out of town on a rail, run to the front and pretend you're leading a parade..."

There are more than one of us who enjoyed "liberation" from Hamilton's joint on the basis that we dared to even question whether rums were altered. In fact, my own experience led me to establish the Project as a truly independent, free and honest voice about rum.

To be honest, I rarely bother with the site anymore, but in a moment of absolute boredom decided to check on things at Simian Central only to find Hamilton addressing a number of vanilla-finding posters, holding forth thusly:
"Whenever I get a lot of vanilla... I ask them to explain how they get the vanilla from the barrels without getting any of the smoky oak or spice that are also imparted (by the barrels). I have yet to find a blender that can look me in eye and tell me anything other than something unrelated to the question.

I see a lot of people buying expensive rums based on claims made on the label or box. While Atlantico is a blend of Caribbean distillates, I can't tell you what else has been added, but everyone who tastes it can see there is more than distillates in that bottle.

So you don't think I'm picking on Atlantico, here are a few more that have undisclosed ingredients: Angostura, Papa Pilar, Pyrat and Zaya."
This is surely the most forward, specific and clear statement of alteration I've ever seen there. Or most anywhere else for that matter. A few sites have only begun to raise the issue, but usually with regard to the old baddies: Z23, Diplomatico, and 1919 being among the few that they are willing to admit. For Hamilton to name these five is actually groundbreaking and not only for him.

What will his flock of flavored followers do now in the face of this? How 'bout Wolfie? Surely the Count will now note the change in wind direction and finally chime in and take his piece of ownership of the issue? There's a long list of former posters who left to start their own sites, some of whom still post there, no doubt for perceived visibility who may now feel obligated to follow the parade.

Friends, pat yourselves on the back.

We have all been incessant in attacking these manipulations. As I've said repeatedly over the past few years, the world of rogue rum on the net is a very small one and together we are heard. Don't forget the Project alone now gets around half-a-million reads/month. We - all of us - often don't appreciate how the word spreads, gets repeated and encourages others to finally voice their own suspicions.

Congratulations!

You can pretty much divide rum drinkers into three categories :

1. Those who don't know about the widespread use of additives in rum
2. Those who know but don't care because the end product tastes good (read : sweet)
3. Those who know and care and prefer unaltered rums or at the very least, some truth in labeling

I agree that the issue is more well known now, in no small part because of this very site (that's where I learned about it or rather confirmed what I suspected), however, I am much less optimistic about anything changing. I have a feeling that the vast majority of rum drinkers are in the first two categories.

I actually signed into the Minsitry for the first time in a long time to reply to this very thread and the replies just confirmed my suspicions.

The main problem I think is that people have the expectation that rum should be very sweet, since it's derived from sugar cane. Add to that the majority of reviewers who favor sweeter rums and thus spent more time reviewing those rums (and favorably to boot), I just don't see that perception changing anytime soon.

Ah MOR I and one or two other here have the very distinction of being banned for broaching the subject of Added sugar in rum. Oh how the wheel comes full circle.

The news/information on additives is getting out there which is a good thing, we may not change the industry but, we will inform the consumer. They in turn if there are enough of them will change the industry. Nothing speaks louder than loss of profits.
Life is under no obligation to give us what we expect!

Bravo!

And exactly right! Give yourself a good clap on the back. Fack those arseholes.... they were rude, crude, condescending and rejected the truth - all of which came back to bite them on their red arses...

We didn't give up. The word spread. You all know who you are, may the godz bless you for fighting the good fight...

I thank you all, and I bow to your support here and whereever else you travel. It's all about truth, and I honor your humanity and dedication. You are part of solution. Fack the bastards!
