Dai, thanks again for a good link...

For those who don't know Johnny Drejer (and his website DRECON), he is yet another fellow traveller who takes his rum and purity seriously. I've known of him for quite some time, and his methodology is reliable. For his extensive list of tests go here:

http://www.drecon.dk/index.php/17-list-of-rum-measured

For those of you who'd like to test rum using his very easy method (all you need is a hydrometer and his charts), go here:

Background...
http://www.drecon.dk/index.php/16-the-hydrometer-method

Use...
http://www.drecon.dk/index.php/19-hydro ... structions

Very simple, but is his method accurate? In a couple words, quite enough. To be sure he compared his method to ALKO et al and his numbers were fine. He also tested a known quantity of dissolved sugar and his method was right on the pesos.

Sweet!

This is actually a "bump"...

I apologize if I didn't give this link enough emphasis (poor wording on my part). You MUST check this one out - it's Drejer's list of the sugar levels found in 160 rums!

This is the most complete listing of sugar levels currently available, far more than even ALKO (around 48 rums).

Don't miss this one! I'm not kidding.

Some scary numbers there.

Could it be possible that sugar is added when they add the distillate in a cask (thus the bottlers are not aware) or is it added before it is bottled?

Not sure when the sugar is added.

The ABV's as well eh? Nearly all labeled 40% ers are all well under. The overproofs seem to hold steady with a lottery on anything in the 43% range.

Typically used casks are shaved, washed, cured, and sometimes charred again otherwise you would have what is known as barrel contamination so to say someone did not know sugar was in the barrel when they added the alcohol would be well a barrel of you know what. And sugar in a new cask would also be out of the question unless they added it. As to when its added varies.

Concerning the Pirates interview I think it was much better than the first and it provided good information.
