Do you need to focus on the spirit in hand to pick it's major and minor flavour profiles? Or do you find now that with experience they all come flooding to mind with ease?

Do you 'switch off' and just enjoy your glass without such thoughts as to its construction?
I don't sit examining every glass of rum I drink! I can assure you I'm really not that "intense".

I still mix as much as sip and I still drink far too much on a fairly regular basis.

I could have (and almost did) a much different blog.....

Great question, and frankly I have not a whit of a problem with "Da'rums half arsed spirit reviews" - in fact, I'd welcome them here, and I mean that. Back to your question:

At the main site (click on frog up top) you'll find I once published a ton of material on tasting and glasses. But having tasted so many, like us all I'm sure, I've developed a number of true favorites that I've come to really love, and at that point my mood points me to my fave-of-the-moment and after that it's pure enjoyment.

OTOH, when Sue Sea and I were trying something brand new for reviewing purposes, you can bet we spent some time with each, even pulling out the old wheel when we were stumped - reading the major categories to see if something clicked. We'd discuss and debate, and often bring out a reference or three after in comparison. Compare to F. Paul whose protocol is rather short and focused. Now for us, the only thing that came quickly was style.

To me one of the very best reviewers is Dave Broom, whose reviews are rarely even a paragraph and yet he manages to nail the experience for the rest of that. Now THAT is art and genius if you ask me...
