Poorer than dirt Dept: Black Tot, who's in?

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Black Tot: a rum worth sharing?

Maybe. I'd stopped by Josh's Inu a Kena site and drooled as he reviewed a single shot of BT that had been afforded him, free! I can't tell you how many times I've speculated buying Black Tot, a true and highly respected rum and piece of history. It's still available for a measly $975 or so (plus shipping). I'm shocked there's any left, really. I mean, really! When I see the thousands that are spent daily for rare and collectible/investible single malts, the idea that any Black Tot remains is beyond me, or is it?

Nope, it really has to do with the difference between a controlled and relatively pure, noble spirit and one that is not. It's about respect. Nonetheless, Black Tot is certainly an exception and a very worthy one - perhaps THE most worthy one.

What say you about the notion of some kind of group purchase and division of the spoils? Best as I can figure that's be about $40/shot, plus a bit for shipping and handling? Seems to me $120 (about 3 shots, enough for a real experience) is within the ability of even compleat cheepskates like me...

Going to have to pass on this but I wish you luck and look forward to your reviews.

Saving my dosh for some probably tasty and pricy bottles that are available only in Europe. By the time the bottles are purchased and shipped the price is embarrassingly high.

On the whiskey side it's been my experience that legendary over a grand bottles don't live up to their reputation even given my fervent anticipation. In fact a couple were bigger let downs than when Jane Mansfield took her bra off.

Due to the underwhelming response, lol...

Let's get real. There isn't a one of you who would turn down the opportunity to taste Black Tot, right? If you had a choice between taking your wife out to dinner or tasting Black Tot, which would you choose? And surely a dinner out with a glass of wine or two would easily be pushing $50, right? Maybe even more.

Be honest now.

Look if you give up one or two dinners for the next year, you too can taste Black Tot, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So here's my thought. If we break down a 750 of Black Tot into units of one shot each, that's 25 "units" of this precious fluid, at a measly $40 each, less than one dinner out with your wife or just half of one dinner with your mistress, nicht vahr? A no brainer! And I daresay that you'll get a bigger, more memorable and nearly guaranteed woodie from the Tot. In sum...

The decision: Tit for Tot?, a no brainer. You decide and remember, your mistress will still be there afterwards...

So let's try this again...

Start: 25 units, less
Jimbo: 22 units left...

Who's next?

I'd join but I've already tried it more than a few times, also I am saving for my own bottle. Fantastic bit of rum.

How about 1 unit?

Capn's Log: That's the idea, anyone can participate in this group purchase for one or any number of units.

Now:

Start: 25 units, less
Jimbo (3): 22 units, less
Hassouni (1): 21 units left.

Lets remember that Black tot is actually a fairly young rum - it has not aged at all since being packed away into demi-john's or such containers in the 1970's. By no means is it worth the price tag in my humble opinion, apart from historical value (??).

What price history?

To each his own of course, but to taste a real and authentic piece of a couple hundred years of history, with a blend of good rums that both British officers and seamen came to love? For me anyway, I'd give up a single dinner out anytime just to know.

Is a taste worth $1000? Never. $40? Yes, yes and absolutely yes! YMMV of course.
