Monk(ey) Dept: Monkeys miscite McDowells and Old Monk

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Just more monkey droppings...

Led by alpha wannabee monkey, the furry Artic Wonder who in his much belated "review" of Old Monk XXX said this:
"Old Monk relies upon word of mouth and customer loyalty for its sales. Word of mouth must be good as this rum is (again according to information I received) the largest selling well-aged dark rum in the world."
Really? You see, this is what happens when you regurgitate distributor provided marketing copy. You end up perhaps 10 years out of date.

The truth...

Way back in monkey history - back in 2002 - "Old Monk was the largest selling branded spirits product in India, selling 7.9 million cases (of 9 litres each), nearly two million cases more than its nearest competitor, Bagpiper Whisky, and more than double the volumes of McDowell’s No.1 Celebration rum, according to International Wine and Spirit Research data."

Unfortunately, owner Mohan Meakin Ltd did a sucky simian job of maintaining their brand, while competitor McDowells (McDowell’s No.1 Celebration Rum) very rapidly blew by Mohan with annual growth rates of well over 10 or even 15%.

Today, Old Monk and Mohan Meakin isn't even in the Top Ten, with sales of less than 1.7M cases, while McDowell's is soon to top 17.8M cases and is projected to finally beat out Bacardi as the #1 brand in the world. And if you take a microsecond to look at their bottle, it is quite obviously a dark rum. QED.

Yet, our mooseshit Canandian reviewer is content to pump out old marketing data and why? Well, why? Fack if I know. Five minutes with our friend Mr. Google is all it took to discover the truth - a truth that any competent reviewer ought to take the time to discover. Frankly, no one should ever trust what any distiller, distributor or marketing department claims. Or freebie-based reviewers for that matter.
