Bar Stool Expert's Dept: "Savory" annoints the 8

Post by Capn Jimbo »

...or do they?

Personally, I've never heard of "Savory", but it exists and just published their list of the eight "best booze blogs to read this year". It's certainly their opinion and they do express it thusly...
"For us, the marks of a great alcohol blog are fairly simple: high quality, humorous prose, and a great network of supplies. If you can write well about the best stuff, then you have something truly valuable and engaging. We don't want to read average old Dougie Rando's rudderless Yelp-esque review of some dog-shit cocktail at some dog-shit bar. We want Wilde on Pappy, Twain on Zinfandel, and Murikami on Pilsner.

The Internet has given everyone a voice and until the Lords of the Cloud start imposing an emissions tax on posting, we'll have to endure a torrent of "content" gushing out of our browsers and drowning us in unedited, first-person piddle. Sadly, there is no application or screening process for starting a blog either, which makes it difficult to discern who really knows the score on booze.

But as usual, The Savory has done the work for you and put together a round-up of some of the best booze blogs to follow in 2014!"

Check it out: whatever happened to Ralfy, the Malt Maniacs, Davin de Kergommeaux, Chuck Cowdery, Janis Robinson, Serge or the like? How bout Bear, the Count, and even - gulp - The Project? Are we all chopped liver? Apparently Savory thinks so and if I daresay...

One of their recommendations tells their whole sordid story. Methinks the "Savory" blog is one of the blogs of which they complain. As a better alternative, I have no doubt you can do much better. I've already named eight of what many think are the best, including mois. So what do you think are the eight best booze blogs on the net?

(Those who name The Project will be keelhauled: we don't count)

There are a few decent booze blogs out there, Marks is a good one. Ralfy's is another. Most though are crap. Booze is a vice where the ego maniacs, narcissists and meglomaniacs come out to be Count Ed. Ice puppy and the shill are just sad characters that clumsily fool fans of rum into believing they are knowledgeable and honorable. Then there's the other sort that through pompous word choices try and put themselves above the rest of the rum/booze community. Trying to give the impression that there is an 'inside' club and that they are privy to secret information. All of this Count's for nothing of course because anyone but the most gullible among us can see through the bullshit and realise this is just another sad ploy by those who are demanding respect and in no way earning it. Of course we are all fallable and sometimes cross the line of ego and common sense but some bloggers/forum hosts have developed being dickheads to a fine art. It's either sell out or self promotion or both. FATW

I don't go to many blogs for reviews but, I do like the Count's blog. He gives a straight forward opinion in an unpretentious way that suits me. I also like Dave Russell from the rum gallery. I must not for get my mucker Andy Abraham's youtube videos on rum either if you have time check them out.

Of course good old Ralfy as well.
