ACR Marque

Post by JaRiMi »

I am reading Drecon's website, and trying to understand the Authentic Caribbean Rum training section there...and what the WIRSPA etc are trying to claim with this "Marque".

http://www.drecon.dk/index.php/18-acr-a ... ibbean-rum

It states:

"Marque Criteria:

Fermented and distilled in a CARIFORUM country.

From sugar cane origin

Distilled below 96% abv.

Flavours are not permitted.

Any colour must be derived from wood or from the addition of caramel.

Must be bottled at 40% abv. (37.5% where permitted)

Where a statement of maturity and/or age is given:
-It shall be that of the youngest distilled spirit in the product.
-The rum shall have been matured in wooden vats or barrels for not less than one year.

As Solera rums normally uses an age statement of the oldest rum and not the youngest, Solera rums can not meet the Marque Criteria."

OK, I am all fine with this - apart from the fact that they've included a whole heap of rums in their listings that are DEFINITELY flavored artificially - and sweetened with sugar. If someone claims that Angostura 1919 gets all its flavor simply from sitting in an ex-bourbon or sherry cask, I would call that person a liar any day. On the other hand, many have expressed doubt to me on the authenticity of for example the age mark on El Dorado's rums..

How sad that a fine campaign goes to waste due to commercial lies & interests :-(

From what you say in your post it would seem that the WIRSPA standard is a toothless dog who will not even enforce (if that is at all possible) it's own standards. Solera rums that are suppose to conforming to the standard as you point out should be giving both oldest and youngest or maybe an average age.

I bought a bottle of Angostura a few months back, the best thing about it was the shape of the bottle. Yes indeed a nice bottle the crap inside it was not worth the £26 I paid for it.

The marque means nothing. They've completely discredited themselves with the rums that are included in their portfolio. Bunch of hooey.

It would seem so.

Agreed, agreed, agreed...

The "ACR" was pure marketing from the begininng. No real money funded it, no real money was spent, and the marque is hard to find.

This was a ploy designed to benefit only the former British colonies, while WIRSPS negotiated with Canada on the basis that the chosen few ex-colonies would only respect the term "Canadian Whiskey", while Canada would only respect the few chosen WIRSPS British ex-colonies. One hand washes the other. The only exception: Cuban rum was allowed to be called "Caribbean" in Canada.

Arseholes all and I did a MAJOR article on WIRSPA and Canada at the main website many years ago. ACR began as a farce, and remains one.
