He scores!!! MGXO

Post by Uisge »

Gotta share this bit of goodness that just happened.

I popped into a nearby liquor store looking for Black Bottle 10YO Blended Scotch (gave my unopened bottle to a friend on NYE), and even though I knew it was no longer available in the UK I thought I could replace it...was I wrong.

But the story doesn't end there, as I spied a box of Mount Gay Extra Old rum, with a price tag that said $37.99 on one corner, $22.99 on another and a slip of paper that said $22.99 on the shelf.

I asked the lady behind the register about it, and after she took a look at it said "$22.99".

Well, I replied that I HAD to take it off her hands at that point! With tax and the minor debit card transaction fee, all for a tick under $26 :D

I just took it out of the box, and there is another sticker on it for $37.99.....and this is the older design bottle.

Capn's Log: Grats! Same thing happened to me when I found a Compass Spice Tree old box for $32 next to a new boxed version for maybe $70. I did the usual perp shuffle up to the register, handed it to the clerk, and yup, $32. BTW, it's obvious to me now why Spice Tree is so hard to find, and roughly double the cost of Asyla, Oak and Peat Monster.

Wow, excellent score for you on the Spice Tree!

If you haven't tried it already, their Orangerie Scotch Liqueur is almost a perfect Christmas type dram.

I'm still working on the sample I poured over 4 hours ago, with some time off for dinner, but you're right about the MGXO being among the top distilled spirits in the world...this stuff is right up there with Highland Park 18YO....so much going on and yet no alcohol burn even though it's 43% ALC by volume!

Capn's Log: We have the Orangerie as well and it is yet another pure spirit using real, authentice and judicious spicing. John Glaser and Compass Box is the Richard Seale of whisky. An automatic purchase if the price is right.

Forgot to mention this update: Along with the trio of miniature finished Glenmorangies, I regained the no-longer produced Black Bottle 10yo blended Scotch!

Capn's Log: You dog, what a find! I can only imagine what a 10 year version of the wonderful, basic Black Bottle must be like. For those of you who want a lovely Islay experience for very little money, Black Bottle is a must buy...

How much did you pay for the BB 10 year? Last time I saw it online, it was going for around $50 and that was almost two years ago.

And I would like to know how it compares to the good old, non-aged labeled Black Bottle?
