When did Bacardi first make rum in Puerto Rico?

Post by jankdc »

Here is a bottle of rum that I got at a flea market a few years ago: Image

I think I paid $20 for it. If you look the date on it is September 1943:

It was originally sold in Ohio

Here is a closer look at the label:

So here is a bottle of Bacardi sold in 1943 that was made in Puerto Rico.

I haven't opened or tasted it. The loss is from evaporation I think.

Bacardi in Puerto Rico...

Pepin Bosch the company's director visited a number of locations to establish a new distillery in the United States. Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Florida were considered and rejected in favor of Puerto Rico, whose climate was more like Cuba's and who had a long history of rum making. Most important there was no import duty to be paid.

In February of 1936 the Bacardi Corporation of American received a license from Puerto Rico, and began operations in January of 1937.
