Dunhill Delux Navy Rolls, I Think The Additive List Is Kaput

Pipes on the ships of old were nothing new. Tobacco and rum made their appearance in short order with tobacco inherited from American Indians and rum from the Caribbean. Smoking aboard ship was allowed by limited to a safe area and at safe times, ergo the "smoking lamp". Where? Usually near the Galley, as it is here. A huge thanks to the amazing da'rum - a man of high ideals and many talents. This is just one of them.

Why did I start with this additive breakdown? Because it fly's in the face of how I would review it. I thought I had smoked additive free tobacco but I actually never have, all the tobacco I have previously smoked was at the very least cased with molasses.

If I were to review this tobacco without the knowledge of the list above I would have sworn that this was lightly cased with inverted sugar and close to natural tobacco as I could get. I can not detect in any way at all a plum concentrate note. I would say that this Navy Roll is actually a bit boring against
Mac Barens Navy Flake which has less additives and out of those that it has only a couple make me wince (Propylparaben and Benzoic Acid .02 of a milligram and .05 of a milligram respectively).

The Dunhill Navy Roll is an enjoyable smoke but one I won't buy again because of it's lack of complexity and over use of additives. I wonder if the EU website is accurate as it lists 3 sorts of sweetening agents as aroma and the Plum concentrate listing really has me scratching my head.

As for the review in earnest, A smoke that starts of with a slightly sweet but not overpowering note. It had me thinking maybe a close natural tobacco taste (I was incorrect) It has a slight spice to it deepening leathery notes but not in a off putting way. I walked the shopping strip of Flensburg smoking a bowl of this and enjoyed my walk without being constantly reminded of what I was smoking. In other words there isn't any wow factor. It's like background music that you don't really listen to. I could see this being overpowered by spirits, rum would kick it's arse and maybe just maybe a light single malt may go well. I'd be more inclined to have a herbal tea or a light beer with this. Coffee would also be too much I think. I have read that this ages well. I doubt it but I haven't tried it so can't say with certainty that it wouldn't. Maybe when one ages the tobacco the chemical agents that are being used as preservatives break down and the tobacco is more enjoyable. Maybe.

So, in Jimboism.

The bottom line. A good smoke. Not great. Overrated a bit. Still enjoyable though.

Matching drinks; Light beer or Herbal Tea (outside chance at a light single malt)

6/10

Thanks for the review...

My local pipe tobacconist (there's only one in Ft. Lauderdale) ordered in a Mac Baren's Navy Flake for me, will be in tomorrow, with my option to refuse it if the price is too high. Chance are I'll take it unless the price is ridiculous (over $20) as I'm looking forward to tasting a minimally aromatic Navy tobacco.

To be frank, even though I have pleasant memories of Middleton's Cherry Blend and Captain Black, the 1-Q was just too much, particuarly as I do love a good cigar with a nice Camaroon wrapper.

We'll see...

Yeah 1Q was a bad start. The navy flake will be better. Not the lolly smoke of a shisha but a good tobacco experience between Cigar and shishs.
