New Site: All Star Cask

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Welcome!

A new rum website has appeared, the All Star Cask (link). We welcome "Sniss" to the wacky world of rum.

Of course - and as a friendly curmudgeon - I felt obligated to add a little perspective to the usual backslapping...
Yes indeed, RvanD (aka Lance), is quite right. What we desperately need are more truly independent and talented rum reviewers, although it will be hard to improve upon the likes of Dave Broom, F. Paul Pacult, the Beverate Tasting Institute and The Rum Project (one of those is a complete farce of course, sorry Dave).

What we don’t need is more “I tasted it, I think this is what I experienced, and I liked it so try it..” reviews. Reviews – as we have learned by experience – are more than just a list of dubious descriptors and personal preferences. For rum to become anything more important than say Canadian whisky, independent sites would do well to note and demand purity and quality.

To date rum is more a fun, piratey liquid that often contains unlabeled additives, as admitted by the MOR and lamented by distiller Richard Seale who really knows.

Otherwise all we’ll get is more Batrum Dingleberry Supreme. There are precious few truly pure and high quality rums but they do exist and are properly held in high esteem. But instead the trend is toward ever more spiced and flavored products which more and more dominate the shelves.

This doesn’t bother the commercial and quasi-commercial sites of course, so it is left to sites like yours, ours and RvanD’s to grow a few pairs and stand firm for improved, pure and well-made offerings.

Strength!

A big shout-out to Sniss...

A big shout-out to "Sniss"...

Inasmuch as Mr. Sniss and his newbie site don't list a handy email address or method of contact, consider this an open note:
"Sniss, my sincere wishes for establishing a web presence. This takes a measure of fanaticism and tolerance for pain to do so. It takes untold hours and a true love of the spirit to put yourself out there over and over with little feedback.

Can you do it?

Let's hope so, but a word to the wise. If you fall into the "it's all good" trap, if you ignore the reality of unlabeled additives, if you defer to the trade for an unbroken supply of freebies - then - your efforts will be unremarkable.

On the other hand, if you work to understand the four or five styles of rum, and to identify and appreciate the leading rums in each category - if you support true quality and purity and speak out loudly for same - if you recognize your limitations and work to contantly learn and improve your tasting skills, well then...

You have a chance."
Do I think you have what it takes? Maybe. However, when you lack the cajones to publish a relatively positive post that raises even a modicum of the challenges facing rum and rum reviewing, then I wonder...

Not to worry, I'm happy to link your site. BTW, RvanD is a prime example of an new reviewer who finally "got it". As have Bilgemunky, the Count, el Machete, Scottes, and Chris Carlsson. Or will you join the likes of the commercial, "it's all good" shilleries including Wolfy, the Preacher, and the Burr Brothers?

A bad start...
