The growth in premium spirits sales was likely out of sync with the glut in used bourbon barrel supply 12 years ago.

That would be 2002. Still the glut, where unsold bourbon was stuck in the barrels, unemptied.

Now that bourbon has disproportionally shot through the roof, perhaps today's new make will enjoy a glut of easily available high quality bourbon barrels.

It also looks good for the future, with historic highs of bourbon barrels being filled and stored this year. Although, in order for those to turn into quality empties for the single malt world, the bourbon boom has to last long enough for those warehoused barrels to go into bottles and be sold. There's just as much danger that by the time they're ready, the public will have moved on to something else, or have changed their consumption levels, and we'll have Glut 2.0. We're drinking pretty hard these days, I think, as a nation. A significant bump in the economy could bring us back to basics, and one of the first things to go would be the purchase of premium spirits.

We've got to hang on for the ride and hope for the best.

Multiple issues:

Glenmorangie 10 is a great "well" malt. Consistent, inoffensive to almost all. Hence the best selling malt in Scotland.

All spirits, wines, etc. suffer crappy years - live with it.

The international, especially Asian, led by Japan, now add China, demand for malt is far beyond production capacity. Scale up now; is demand the same in 10, 12, 15 20 years? An ugly conundrum for producers who have been teetering for years.
