Yes I remember Jarimi or the Count commenting on this before. Even so they make a good alternative to El Dorado.Rum-pelstiltskin wrote:DDL is in the only distillery left in Guyana. Did yo buy any rum for Christmas?
I got about 10 bottles of liquor from co-workers/family these holidays. 3 were rum... 2 interesting rums I got ... Mainly because I am a major fan of Domestic rum from Craft distillers.
Both of these rums are made from craft distillers in NY state.
The first is called
"Cooperstown Distillery Sam Smith's Boatyard Rum"
"Made from 100% non- GMO sugar cane molasses"
This rum is distilled in Florida state but aged for a minimum of 2 years in Bourbon Barrels in their warehouse in Cooperstown, NY.
86 Proof

The 2nd Is made by a distiller called hometown brew Distillery out of Rochester, NY.
Called " New York State of Mind Spice Rum"
This rum is distilled from Brown Sugar with a touch of local honey added into the fermentation. All the spices are locally sourced from Rochester, NY of the highest quality the distiller could find.
"Each bottle Home Town Brew makes is craft, small-pot distilled, by hand, by the gallon with unique Rochester ingredients."
Very classy bottling with a leather patch and wax seal.
90 proof

We were discussing the XM rum.Hassouni wrote:Just to note, the Cadenhead "Caribbean" IS product of Guyana. The Samaroli "Caribbean" is product of Cuba. Just because one says Caribbean doesn't mean it is not guyanese, or from anywhere else specifically.
Which changed from Demerara to Caribbean because the rum is no longer Guyanese.
I also was gifted another rum I needed to look into more...
called : "Copacabana Anejo Rum 1940"
A bit much to explain but here is a explanation of those behind this new rum which launched in July of this year at Copacabana club in NYC.
"Celebrity Chef Alex Garcia and Restaurateur Spencer Rothschild, partners of Barrio Spirits and the legendary nightclub Copacabana in New York City are introducing the iconic brand to the spirits industry with Copacabana 1940 - a smooth 7 year old Añejo rum. The two industry experts have assembled a team that includes former president and COO of Cruzan Rum International, Jay Maltby, Barrio Spirits' Director of sales, Robert Rosenthal and the Master Distiller, Francisco "Don Pancho" Fernandez."

"Copacabana 1940 is a distilled at one of the most revered distilleries in the world, Las Cabras in Panama. The central province of Herrera is known for its abundant sugar cane fields that grow in nutrient-rich volcanic soil fed by rivers stemming from mineral-rich mountain springs. This all leads to an opulent, well balanced, sensual rum with strong hints of citrus and a light caramel and almond finish."

I personally note that the glass bottle is the same one used for "Penny Blue XO Rum" by Berry Bros & Rudd. Also everything I had read on this one states 7 years the bottle does not appear to have any age statement.

I also bought this one for myself:
"Byram River rum" - Another NY Craft Distillery rum from Port Chester, NY.
Distiller notes:
"After dozens of fermentation and distillation experiments, we perfected a special blend of cane juice for its floral notes and sweet molasses for its hardiness. We then selected a unique strain of wine yeast to bring out the best in the sugarcane and molasses, creating a “cane wine” - delicious in its own right. After careful temperature controlled fermentation we conduct a precise distillation to extract only the most flavorful heart of the spirit that yields a rum with real depth and character. "

Nice rums, I'm a firm believer that it will be the craft industry that will preserve the quality of rum. The big boy's intent on lowering quality at every opportunity to make a buck at our expense.mamajuana wrote:I got about 10 bottles of liquor from co-workers/family these holidays. 3 were rum... 2 interesting rums I got ... Good point but, I have no idea where XM rum is from. I do know that the taste profile is Guyanese. Johnny Dreyer lists the 12 year old as 17gm/l of added sugar if the 10 year old is similar? then it would make an alternative to ED 12 to 21 range as far as added sugar goes. This all depends on your point of view of course.Hassouni wrote:Just to note, the Cadenhead "Caribbean" IS product of Guyana. The Samaroli "Caribbean" is product of Cuba.
