In general, there is no such thing as "no sugar allowed", as there are no firm regulations, the United States doesn't really check or enforce their regulations on additives, and relies mostly on distiller claims.
The US does conduct a few mandatory checks, but sugar is not one of them. Still the experience is that most Bajan disillers tend not to use sugar, with the sole exception of Richard Seale who quite publicly makes clear two things:
1. No sugar or unlabelled additives of any kind
2. All his age statements reflect the youngest rum in the bottle.
3. He insists that he bottles all product made by him for others, so as to guarantee the claims made.

Over the years I've had personal communications with Seales - a very impressive man - and that is why he insists on bottling any product - his own or that made for others - at his distillery, Foursquare. This is done precisely to avoid alteration of his product by anyone. Of course that would not prevent the buyer from opening the bottles and resealing them, but I hardly doubt they'd do that, when there is so much bulk out there from others. It makes little sense to pay for Seales' bottles, sealing and bottling cost only to open, modify, relabel and rebottle them.
Seale's name on the label is very meaningful, and he has always been quite clear on this restrictive policy. The same cannot be said of DDL, et al.
I hardly doubt that as well but that isn't what I was saying. Seale supplies rum in bulk to other companies which is bottled and blended. Terms such as dosage and elevage are particularly popular with at least one of these.Capn Jimbo wrote:Rum-pelstiltskin wrote:He also provides rum to other bottlers which is subsequently altered.

The world of rum is a bad one. It would seem that anything goes to make a buck. Bullshit marketing, additives etc. There are only a handful of genuine rum producers/bottlers who have stayed genuine to the business of rum, the rest are just in it to make a quick buck at our expense.Rum-pelstiltskin wrote:Yes but if he sells the rum in bulk abroad to be used by other bottlers then they are free to do what they please.Hassouni wrote:Hasn't Seale said that by law in Jamaica and Barbados unlabeled additives are not allowed?
Besides Cognac Ferrand are not shy about adding "dosage" to their rums

KIndly cite the specific rum and claims. If Seales sells any bulk, it will not carry or refer to his name, nor will he modify it in any way, period.. Anything with Seales-made on the label is bottled by him, as he is fanatical about his purity of his product, his reputation and and his honesty in label. If you are aware of any bulk (unbottled sales) that carry his name as distiller, name it.Rum-pelstiltskin wrote:Yes but if he sells the rum in bulk abroad to be used by other bottlers then they are free to do what they please.

I am not much for innuendo here, so do be specific. As for Ferrand, little needs to be said about their deceptive practices and failure to provide specifics.
