*cough*Hamilton*cough* Demerara 151

Post by Hassouni »

So, it appears that Lemon Hart 151, much loved by Tiki-fiends like myself, is not being imported or distributed in the US or something.

In its place we have a Demerara 151 from the Eddie H collection. I saw it in my favorite boozeria today, and asked the proprietor, a very respectable and upstanding fellow, how it compared to Lemon Hart. He claimed it was at least as good if not better, as the Preacher sampled and selected the distillates that went into the final blend.

I'm a long way from running out of Lemon Hart, but I'm curious if anyone out there has tried it? LH151 diluted, or even LH80, were FAR better rums for cocktails calling for "Demerara rum" than any of the El Dorado crap. If this new 151 is as good as the old, I might shrug off a bit of disdain for EH and pick some up eventually.

I've bought some, Hass.

But it arrived while I was out to sea, where I still am now.

I never had any access to the original LH151.

I would be happy to send you a sample of the new EH version, as well as a sample of the Mosaiq LH151 from a few years ago.

You'd be in a position to compare and contrast. I think I've got about a snowball's chance in Texas (perhaps a better chance lately than usual?) of finding an original LH151 myself, so we'd be grateful to hear how close he got.

I understand the Mosaiq one was pretty far OFF the mark. I haven't tasted it in quite a while, and my rum consciousness has been exploding since then.

PM me your address and I'll get something fired off to you in early April.

Not tried LH151 so can not say. What I will say is that any mixer with Demerera rum has a funny taste to me. Not sure why but it just tastes like shyte the very same mixer with rum from Cuba, Barbados, or jamaica is ok, just my taste buds being wierd.

I can tell you Woods 100 makes a superb aged egg nog!

Minimum 1 month in the fridge. Came out fantastic. I thought I'd have to experiment with a few rums before I got it right, but I loved this so much on the first try I'm hesitant to go further.

I might try doing it with Pusser's Overproof next. Perhaps Christmas in July... I want to have my recipe sorted in time for Xmas proper.

OK, thanks to Señor Tot, I was able to side-by-side the new Demerara 151 against the original LH 151 and the Mosaiq one.

Both the original and Mosaiq ones are no more than half full and have been for quite some time, so bear that in mind.

After a while open, the Mosaiq one doesn't hold a candle to the original. The original is molassessy and estery, "rummy", and full bodied. The Mosaiq one is harsh and bitter and not very pleasant, either neat nor with water added (all were tasted that way).

As for Eddie's new 151...it was a lot closer to the original Lemon Hart. It tastes a bit softer and more buttery than the old one, but overall, stylistically it's EXTREMELY close to the original.

I hate to say it, but EH has filled a market gap rather adroitly :?

Between this and the NAS El Dorado dark I tried recently, it seems that there are some decent cheap Demeraras on the market that aren't trying to act all hyper-premium but are still pretty good.

PS: all 3 rums clearly had sugar added, but given that they're not marketed as being some pristine premium product, or sipper of any sort, it doesn't really bother me,

I have yet to get the measuring set, I have ZERO disposable income at the moment :( though I assure you I will as soon as that changes.

That said, I'm sure all 3 iterations of Demerara 151 have sugar added...

The thanks are all yours, Hass.

It is a great and rare intersection when someone whose tastebuds can be trusted actually has the good stuff to validate something.

I'm glad I took a gamble on this. After seeing some initial reviews on forums and being afraid I would miss the boat, I bought a 12 case.

I'm excited about being able to move forward with my introduction into the world of cocktails this summer with something that I can substitute for LH151 and feel confident I've done the best I can with what's presently available, and the compromise will not be too severe.

Whatever our feelings about Ed, good on him in this case!

Indeed!

I'll also soon try the Eddie 151 carefully diluted down to 114 then 80 proof to see how it compares with Woods 100, Lemon Hart 80 (super rare) and to my memory of the NAS El Dorado.
