Who's Robert J. van de Weg?


Darned if I knew. But I happened to check the signatures on the Petition to Save Caribbean Rum and found his, which included his comment:

"I'm the founder/owner of Pirate's Grog Rum. I believe strongly in protecting the Caribbean rum. Our rum is a 100% premium blended Caribbean rum and I would not have it otherwise. It's time for us Pirate's to take matters into our own hands..... Aaarrrgg"

Van de Weg is not alone and joins such credible signers as authors Dave Broom, Beachbum Berry, Davin de Kergommeaux and other distillers including El Dorado's Carl Kanto and Ron de Jeremy, to name just a few. Not a few rum webmasters have signed as well.

All of these are willing to rise above petty politics to support our common love for authentic Caribbean rum.

The petition continues to grow on its own as our own big push ended many months ago. It's a damn shame that promoters like Hamilton, Burr and their simian wannabees have chosen to bend to the Big Three...

Pirate's Grog Rum

"Pirate’s Grog Rum hails from the small island of Roatan (just off the coast of Honduras), but is actually a blend of 4 Caribbean rums (from Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana and …..), all of which have been aged for between 3 and 5 years. A touch of Jamaican pot still rum is added in the process to give it some depth. The rum is hand bottled in Roatan and bottled at 37.5% ABV, making is strongly aimed at the mixing rum market although we will review it as a sipper as well.

Nose
No single overwhelming note, but quite subtle vanilla and toffee

Taste
Quite strong but you can taste the jamaican pot still rum coming through smoothly on the finish. Taste of what we can only describe as toffee apples comes through as well.

Presentation
Simple bottle style but we love the rough label with traditional pirate symbols on it, making proud mention of Roatan on the front and giving a history of Grog and Roatan on the back.

Mix it up
We tried 50ml of Pirate’s Grog with some Fentiman’s Ginger Ale and a generous amount of fresh Lime and ice which made for a very refreshing drink, and although we weren’t instantly transported to Roatan (we’ve never been so couldn’t conjure up the images) it was never the less a very tasty drink. We also tried it with cola and were surprised as the smoothness of the rum, with it easily competing with the more established brands like Captain Morgan’s Dark and Bacardi 8.

"This rum features a citrine color with reddish highlights. The aroma is robust and assertive, a combination of slow-fermented, high-congener rum with notes of toasted nuts, preserved fruits and a touch of spices.

The body is lighter than the aroma suggested and less complex too. The rum opens up smoothly in the palate, sugary sweet at first, then dry tannins come forth and finally a touch of nutmeg reaches the back of the throat.

The finish is clean and lasts a few seconds. Naval rum aficionados will want to enjoy this rum neat, while those not accustomed to the rich aroma will benefit from the addition of ice."

To be fair we have never seen this rum, but it sounds interesting, thus you can be sure we will review it if possible... again, thanks to Mr. van de Heg for his signature.
