Purity: Berry Bros. and Rudd speak...

Post by Capn Jimbo »

Berry Bros. and Rudd - singular or plural?

I used the plural noun, but then again they/it are/is a single company, so perhaps the singular is in order, ie. "Berry Bros & Rudd speaks". But I mumble and digress, as always.

Recently I sent yet another of my distiller inquiry emails, this time to BB&R and as always, questioning the purity of their products. My question: "Do your rums contain any additives or coloring of any kind?". Their kind and honest response (for which they get a free Capn Jimbo Authorized Shameless Plug):
BB&R: "Thank you for your enquiry. We currently have a range of 6 Berry Bros & Rudd rums available in the USA. These are all natural colour with no additives and are bottled at 92 US proof. They are all single barrel editions.

Guadeloupe 12 yr
Grenada 13 yr
Fiji 9 yr
Barbados 11 yr
Panama 10 yr
St Lucia 11 yr

David Driscoll of K&L Wines picks: Berry Bros & Rudd St Lucia 11 Year Old Rum - "Best rum of the year and a leading contender for my overall spirit of the year. Honey, cherries, menthol, fruit tea, and bitter spice. It's pretty freaking odd. It's also pretty freaking delicious. I don't know what makes it taste this way, but I wish I could find more rums like it."

The range is available through selected branches of Total Wine & More and specialist outlets such as K&L Wines in San Francisco. "
BB&R joins a growing list of honest and pure rums including those of Richard Seale, Diplomatico Ambassador Selection, and Panamonte XXV Reserva Preciosa to name a few.

Special kudos to BB&R for their honesty and directness, and to the last two super-premium rums who have thrown down the gauntlet and exclaimed their purity as their primary sales point.

Very good to know about this, but not surprising.

Until such time as when a BBR Own labeled vodka appears I think that most anything they sell under their own label would be worth the price.

A quick perusal of their web site leaves one not finding any own brand vodka, nor ANY Canadian whisky. No doubt a sign of a very good retailer for you, Cap'n

On the downside, they do have some things that aren't available outside the UK (read: This is why we can't have nice things in the US  ) such as Green Spot Irish Pot Still whiskey, The Pink Pigeon spiced rum from Mauritius, and anything from The English Whisky Company, with the latter due to US stupidity (aka "England doesn't have a recognized appellation for whisky, so you can't ship it here" )

I was able to pop into the store when I was in London in December of '03 as a birthday gift to myself during a rather stressful time in my life. Very close to Buckingham Palace, neat store, too.
