Next up (or rather down), the Caribbean distillers...

Appleton: 2 rums
Atlantico: 3 rums
Barbancourt: 5 rums
Barcelo: 3 rums
Barrilito: 1 rum
Brugal: 2 rums
Brugal: 2 rums
Carta Vieja Añejo
Centenario 7
Dictador 20: 1 rum
Don Pancho: 14 rums
Dos Maderas: 2 rums
English Harbour: 3 rums
Flor de Cana: 3 rums
Hampton Estate/Rum Fire: 1 rum
Mount Gay: 4 rums
Ocumare: 1 rum
Plantation: 12 rums
Papa’s Pilar: 2 rums
Pito Rico: 5 rums
Rum St. Barth: 1 rum
Roble Viejo: 1 rum
Santa Teresa: 1 rum

Oh my! Down to - grrr - a mere 23! But even this overstates the case. Most of these are rums that already have good distribution and are widely available. Of the thousands of rums, let's talk about the nitty gritty - exposure of new, hard to find, small and relatively undistributed rums. The ones that really need love and support...

I hope you're sitting down...
Hampton Estate/Rum Fire: 1 rum
Papa’s Pilar: 2 rums
Pito Rico: 5 rums
Rum St. Barth: 1 rum
Roble Viejo: 1 rum

Yup, just five true Caribbean rums, who managed to part with the thousands in Burr-ransom to buy a table. Nothing is given there. It's actually worse - seems that two of these rums already have distribution.

Bottom Line...

Three true Caribbean and needy rums/distillers out of 128. And who paid to be there, and whose exposure was limited to moneyed party people in Miami who really didn't care and who likely won't be able to find a bottle anyway.

Such is life.

Saddest thing to see, is that there aren't ANY independent's included in this "grand festival of rum" that I can see.

The big mass is hispanic bulk rum BRANDS - not even distilleries. A big majority of the rums represent the sweet nothings of rum.

Too bad - for the paying crowd.

My favorite distiller (RL Seale) sits it out!

Still trying to figure their business model! Can they float as a Total Wine house brand? RL Seale 10 YO - beautiful rum in a beautiful bottle, but UNDERPRICED and mostly unavailable. I don't get it.

Sounds like it is a money making operation first and foremost and rum promotion second. Nothing wrong in making money. Just a pity some of that money couldn't be put to promoting lesser known rums and giving some of the smaller producers a break.

Sometimes we must comment but we lend a modicum of credibility to the farcical characters to which our criticism is directed.

Idiotic shilling just like his unliked brother in harms Hamilton. Each time he steps up to the plate to defend himself or his profit at all costs methodology he is summarily flogged by any debater that can read, write and think.

These festivals are shill festivals, not rum festivals. The suckers will always go and those who just have a spare day that they would like to fill. Slowly but surely the credibility or lack there-of will start to bite.

So regardless of my starting premise that commenting lends credibility, I am sure that overwhelming greed and lack of ethics will sink such blubbery ships.

I too was surprised not to see Seale on the list, as in the past he has always attended. Is Foursquare saving their pennies, or is there more to this? Does he feel the festivals really don't help (my guess)? To attend probably requires a week of time and a healthy amount of product to give away to 15,000 attendees.

And for what? His products are already distributed.

Dai, your point is right on. If this festival sold the number of tickets projected, I'd guess the gross was in seven figures. That is a lot of money and surely enough to say spend ten or twenty thousand dollars to promote some small and deserving rums.

But then again, how would that affect those who paid dearly for their tables who would scream bloody murder?

They may scream they may not it would depend on wether it was up front that this was the practice of the festival. A lot of those rum producers/distributors may be looking at the bigger picture of what this festival may do for them and that may well out way any concession to a small producer.

I suppose if it was called the "Small Producer looking for traction and distribution Fest" then my panties would be as wadded as yours.

It doesn't seem much different than the Whiskey Fest that rolls into three large markets every year. It's primarily a party and a chance to try a lot of different pours. Meet some industry people and perhaps touch base with some friends and other enthusiasts. The numerous attendees are by and large beginners to mid level enthusiasts who are there to try some new juice without buying the bottle, particularly given the ever increasing cost of Scotch and Bourbon.

On forums there are threads like "Dumb Stuff The Reps Said ay Whisky Fest". No one takes the prizes awarded seriously except the retailer who wants something to print on his shelf rider.
